May IWSG: Spring is finally here!

This is a monthly event started by the awesome Alex J. Cavanaugh and organized by the Insecure Writer's Support Group. Click here to find out more about the group and sign up for the next event. You can also sign up for the newsletter.

First off a big announcement: the IWSG anthology, titled Parallels: Felix Was Here, is here! Featuring 10 stories from ISWG authors, hand-picked by a panel of agents and writers, you can now get it from Amazon and other retailers. Complete list of purchasing links here.

It's May already, can you believe it? How was your month of April, did you do the A-Z challenge? Already making plans for the summer?

My April wasn't too bad: I'm wrapping up a project at work and I finished a short story which will be the prequel to a new world I'm creating. It's a space opera and I'm very excited about it mostly because... I've never written space opera before! :-) Here's a question for you: would you release a prequel as soon as it's ready or would you wait until the first installment in the series is ready to be released too?

In other news, we've had some very much needed moisture in Northern New Mexico and so I took the chance and shot some droplet macros. :-) Happy May everyone!

  1. Cool shot.
    Space opera - awesome!
I think I'd release the prequel right before the first book.

  4. I have been reading about releasing and stuff. It is kind of two minds and where are and what you need. Some say wait for first installment, because it will give the novel more traction. Other say get it out there to pull in people to your signup, so they hear about all your new releases.

Me, no opinion yet. Congrats getting things done. Space opera huh? I dig that. Can't wait to read.

    Beautiful photo.

  5. You could release the prequel. It'd be a good way to build buzz for the series.

  6. We could use some serious moisture. So far El Nino has been a dud.

  7. Love the photo! Such a gorgeous close-up. :)

And gosh, it's so hard to believe May is here. I had to replace a dead laptop last month, though, so I'm not upset about April being gone already, haha.

And how exciting about the prequel story! A space opera must've been fun for you to write. If you plan to market the prequel as...well, a prequel, it's probably best to release it when the first installment is ready, too. Some readers might feel confused, or even cheated, by the fact that a prequel exists for a series that isn't even out yet.

And from a writerly standpoint...unexpected things could change in the first installment while you're prepping it, which might force you to change something in the prequel story. Waiting to release it would give you the freedom to revise it again, should you need to.

  8. Congrats on your new project! I'm in a similar place with a series and a prequel and I'd definitely rather wait until everything is ready before releasing anything, but I guess it depends on the individual project. I kind of see a prequel as extra content for those who want to know more so I might release it during, or even after the series.

  9. Beautiful photo! A space opera is pretty exciting. I think I might wait for the release until you're all set, just to make sure no more changes are needed.

  10. Love the photo! Cool about the space opera. Love them! Are you going to release the prequel for free? Then I'd do it before the 1st book, with a link to pre-order Book 1. Best wishes.
